Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia and was founded in 1837.
Before the Civil War, Atlanta thrived and the city was a major Southern center
of domestic and military transportation. During the battle of Atlanta,
the city was nearly decimated by the Yankee troops of Federal General Sherman.
Over 10,000 people died in the battle and only 400
of the almost 4,000 buildings remained standing.

Today, Atlanta is a city of almost 400,000 people. It is home too to CNN and Coca Cola.
Most of the city's skyscrapers can be found in the downtown and midtown area,
as well as in some of the suburbs (Buckhead) and nearby towns, that technically speaking,
are not part of Atlanta itself.

Above: Bank Of America Plaza (aka NationsBank Plaza),
Atlanta's tallest skyscraper (312m/1023f, 55 stories, 1992).
On the left picture, next to Bank Of America Plaza is BellSouth Building, (206m/677f, 47 stories, 1980).
Both buildings can be found inbetween the downtown and midtown area's of Atlanta.

Above: five pictures of SunTrust Plaza, Atlanta's second tallest building (265m/871f, 60 stories. 1992).
The last picture shows the entrance of the building and part of the little park with sculptures in front of it.
SunTrust Plaza is part of the downtown area.

Above: One Atlantic Center, Atlanta's 3rd tallest skyscraper (250m/820f, 50 stories, 1987),
For many this is Atlanta's most beautiful skyscraper, though personally I like SunTrust Plaza,
Promenade II and Bank of America Plaza better
One Atlantic Center can be found in the midtown area of Atlanta.

Above: also part of the downtown area is 191 Peachtree Tower,
Atlanta's 4th tallest structure (235m/770f, 50 stories, 1990).

Above: Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta's 5th tallest building
and one of the tallest hotels in the world (220m/722f, 73 stories, 1976).
The round shaft at the side of the building (see middle picture) is the elevator tube
that leads to the revolving restaurant and bar and panoramic view area at the top of the building.
Westin Peachtree Plaza is also part of the downtown area.

Above: Georgia Pacific Tower, Atlanta's 6th tallest skyscraper (212m/697f, 52 stories, 1981),
with two streetviews and a view from the Westin Peachtree Plaza.
Georgia Pacific Tower can be found in the downtown area.

Above: Promenade II, Atlanta's 7th tallest skyscraper (211m/691f, 40 stories, 1989).
Together with SunTrust Plaza also one of the most beautiful buildings of the city.
You can see the reflection of One Atlantic Center in Promenade II, in the picture on the left.
Promenade II is part of the midtown area.

Above: GLG Grand, Atlanta's 9th tallest building
(186m/609f, 53 stories, 1992). The first 19 stories of this building are part of the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta,
the next five are offices and the rest is home to some very expensive condominiums.
Like One Atlantic Center and Promenade II, GLG Grand can be found in the midtown area of Atlanta.

Above left: view towards the downtown area of Atlanta, with the tops of SunTrust Plaza,
191 Peachtree, Georgia Pacific Tower and Westin Peachtree Hotel.

Above right: view towards the midtown area of Atlanta, with on the left, GLG Grand and Promenade II.
On the right, you can see 1100 Peachtree (130m/426f, 28 stories, 1991)
and Campanile (112m/367f, 25 stories, 1987).

Not on the pictures is Atlanta's latest addition to its skyline: 1180 Peachtree.
The building, which was completed early 2006, can be found in the midtown area of Atlanta
It is 198m/650f tall with 41 stories.
