Bank of China Tower facts & figures:
- the building is situated on One Garden Road, Central, on Hong Kong Island;
- the tower was designed by I.M. Pei & Partners,
with Sherman Kung & Associates Architects Ltd.;
- construction on the tower started in April of 1985; the building was topped
out in 1989 and opened in May of 1990;
- it was Hong Kong’s and Asia’s tallest
skyscraper from 1989-1992, until Central Plaza was completed;
in fact, it was the first skyscraper outside of the USA to break the 300m/1,000f
mark!
- it currently (2008) is Hong Kong’s third tallest skyscraper,
although it will drop one place
when International Commerce Center will be completed
in 2010;
- the height of the tower is including the two spires on top;
without, the tower has a height of 305m/1,001f;
- the tower, which is built on a 6,700 square meters site, has an asymmetrical
shape;
Comprised of four vertical
shafts, the tower emerges from a 52-meter cube and diminishes its mass,
quadrant by quadrant, until a single triangular prism remains.
The faceted prism is clad in reflective glass that mirrors the changing sky.
- the building has a 17-story bank atrium;
- the tower has a small observation deck on the 42nd
floor open to the public;
it gives views to the northwest of Hong Kong;
there is another observation deck on the 70th floor, but this is a private one;
- the design of the building resembles growing bamboo shoots,
its sectioned trunk reaching higher and higher with each new growth,
and symbolizes strength, vitality and growth;
- the skyscraper is part of A Symphony Of Light, a permanent nightly spectacle
in Hong Kong
that combines interactive lights of 44 key buildings on both Hong Kong Island
and Kowloon
with musical effects to showcase the vibrancy and glamorous night vista of
Victoria Harbour;
- the tower has a total gross floor area of 135,000 square metres (1,453,128 sq ft);
- the building has 45 elevators;
- Bank
of China Tower's neighbour, the 1999 completed Cheung Kong Centre,
is sometimes referred to by locals as 'the
box that BoC came in';
