DZ-BANK
TURM
208 metres/682 feet
53 stories
Completed: 1993
The
DZ-Bank Turm (Tower in German) is also known as Westendstraße 1,
Kronenhochhaus or Westendtower.
It was constructed from 1990 until 1993 and
can be found in the unofficial skyscraper capital of Europe, Frankfurt,
Germany.
Because of its many skyscrapers and with a reference to the river that flows
through the city,
Frankfurt has been given the nickname Mainhattan.
When completed DZ-Bank Turm
was Frankfurt's and Germany's 2nd tallest skyscraper
(behind Frankfurt's MesseTurm), and Europe's 6th
tallest. It's currently the city's third tallest.
The tower is located between a residential area of Frankfurt (Westend) and a commercial district.
Some DZ BankTurm facts &
figures:
- The building was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox,
with Nägele, Hofmann, Tiedemann;
- the building is the headquarters of the DZ Bank;
- The steel crown on top weighs a massive 95 metric tons.
It extends 11 metres from the building,
and is heated in winter to avoid icing.
In the early evening hours, the crown is brightly
illuminated;
- in front of the building a 12 metres tall sculpture of a giant tie
(Inverted Collar and Tie; 1994)
by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje
van Bruggen can be found;
- building costs were approximately US$ 400 million;
- about 1,600 people work in the building;
- the tower has a gross floor area of 80,000 square metres;
- the tower is part of a complex that also consists of a
14-story office block. The tower and the smaller office block
are both connected by a 900 square metres
low-rise section called Wintergarten with shops and
restaurants.
The Wintergarten is open to the public. The rest of
the building is not.
