at the same event being overtaken by Michele Alboreto's Ferrari,
and in the 1989 Ligier, again at Spa-Francorchamps.
René Arnoux was a title contender with Renault and Ferrari in the years 1979-1984, winning 7 races.
After he was sacked by Ferrari under mysterious circumstances at the beginning of 1995,
he spent the last years of his Formula 1 career with Ligier accumulating 14 points in the first year (1986)
with the team, and a disappointing three in the last three years.
In his career, René Arnoux achieved 18 Formula 1 Pole-positions,
the most by a non-title winning driver.
After his retirement Arnoux set up DAMS Racing (Driot Arnoux Motor Sports).
The team has been successful in Formula 3000, sportscars, and GT Racing,
winning among others the F3000 Championships with Erik Comas (1990),
Olivier Panis (1993), and Jean-Christophe Bouillon (1994).

René Arnoux was a driver that was very hard to pass, even when the leaders lapped him.
People said he never watched his mirrors, but the middle picture shows that he
not only watched them, he even adjusted them! On the picture, René is adjusting his left mirror
while driving his Ligier through the Ostkurve at Hockenheim.
