Paolo Barilla, heir to the Barilla pasta empire, made his Formula 1 debut with Minardi
at the end of 1989, when he stepped in for Martini at the Japanese Grand Prix.
(Before that he had been a successful sportscars driver and had raced Formula 3000 in Japan
and two Formula 3000 seasons in Europe in 1987 and 1988 with lesser success).
He made it to the grid, but his race ended right after the start when his clutch failed.
In 1990, Minardi gave him the possibility of a full season of Formula 1,
but F1 proved too much for the very sympathetic Italian.
After three non-qualifications in a row, he was replaced for the last two
races of the year by Gianni Morbidelli; it was the end of his Formula 1 career.
Barilla is currently one of three Barilla brothers that lead the Barilla Group.
He hasn't retired from motor-racing yet and steps behind the wheel
of a racing car every now and again.
