Arguably, Jan Lammers may be considered the best Dutch racing driver of all times,
although some might say this 'title' belongs to Jos Verstappen.
In any case, Jan Lammers has proved to be a very versatile racing driver,
having driven Formula 1, INDY cars, Group C, Formula 3000, GT, and touring cars.
In 1973, yet without a driving license, he became Dutch Touring Car champion with Simca.
In 1978, he won his next title: European Formula 3 champion.
In 1979, Lammers made his Formula 1 debut with the Shadow team.
In 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982 Jan drove for small, under financed, teams,
which meant there was not much chance of any success.
Still, at Long Beach in 1980 with the ATS Jan Lammers did the impossible
by qualifying the ATS on the second row of the grid (4th).
The best F1 starting position of a Dutch racing-driver ever.
But, this was the sole highlight of his Formula 1 career,
in which a lot of talent was apparent at times, but due to bad equipment and lack of cash
he had no chance of achieving good results.
By 1983, he was out of Formula 1, but it wasn't the end of his Formula 1 career.
In 1992, he made a surprise comeback with the March team for two races.
With this comeback he set a record: the longest gap between Formula 1 starts
in the history of Formula 1 racing; ten years, or 3,745 days to be precise.

In between and after his Formula 1 career Lammers was (and still is) a very successful
sportscar and touring car driver. His most successful time he had with Jaguar in Group C from 1986-1990.
In 1988, he won Le Mans with Andy Wallace and Johnny Dumfries,
while in 1987 he won three Group C races with John Watson (Jerez, Monza, Fiji),
and the team's championship with Jaguar.
Lammers still races in sportscars and at Le Mans each year with his own team, Racing for Holland.
