Lehto was a protégé of former Finnish F1 world champion Keke Rosberg.
His real name is Jyrki Jarvilehto, but JJ was beter for his racing career, so he changed it.
In 1988 JJ won the British Formula 3 Championship and in 1989 he briefly was Ferrari's test-driver.
That same year he got the chance at Onyx to replace Bertrand Gachot and he made his Formula 1 debut.
In 1991, he switched to a better team, Dallara, also known as Scuderia Italia.
With this team he scored his best Formula 1 result of his career: third in the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix.
After a year with Sauber, he was picked up by Benetton to partner Michael Schumacher.
Lehto seemed destined for a very bright future in F1, but a testing accident,
in which he broke a vertebrae in his neck meant the momentum was over.
He made a brief comeback, but was soon after replaced by test-driver Jos Verstappen.
It was the end of his Formula 1 career, although he raced two more Grand Prix with Sauber
at the end of 1994.
Lehto next turned his attention to other categories of motor-racing and was quite successful.
In sportscars he won the 1995 24H of Le Mans in a McLaren F1.
For the last couple of years, Lehto has been racing in the United States (ALMS).
In March of 2005 he won the 12 Hours of Sebring for Audi,
together with teammates Tom Kristensen and Marco Werner;
and in June of 2005 the 24 Hours of Le Mans for a second time.
JJ also acts as a commentator for the Finnish television at Formula 1 races.
