Gianni Morbidelli was Italian and European Formula 3 champion of 1989.
In 1990, he became a Ferrari Formula 1 test-driver, made his debut in Formula 1,
and also drove his one and only season in Formula 3000, with Forti Corse.
Gianni finished 5th in the championship with one race win and 20 points.
Just before the beginning of that season he had already made his F1 debut
as a stand-in for Emanuele Pirro at Dallara. For his first Grand Prix
he failed to qualify, but for his next (and last for Dallara) he did;
he qualified 16th and finished 14th at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
At the end of the year he was picked up by Minardi to replace Paolo Barilla.
He drove for the Minardi in the next two years, although - still a Ferrari test-driver -
did one race for Ferrari at the end of 1991. The Australian Grand Prix
in which he scored his first (half) championship point.
In 1993, Gianni was not active in Formula 1, but drove touring cars for Alfa Romeo in Italy.
He returned in 1994 and drove for Footwork. At the Australian Grand Prix in 1995
he scored his best F1 result: 3rd.
In 1996, he was out of F1 again, although he was Jordan's test and reserve driver.
He returned a third (and last time) in 1997 as Ferrari's test driver and later
as Sauber's second driver. During testing at Magny-Cours he broke his arm.
After his F1 career, Gianni raced touring cars and sportscars in Italy and Europe.
