Satoru Nakajima was Formula 2 champion of Japan in 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, and 1986
before he made his debut in Formula 1 with Lotus, mainly thanks to engine supplier Honda
who wanted a Japanese driver in one of their cars.
Satoru was the first regular Japanese driver in Formula 1.
Before that Japanese drivers had only occasionally been part of the Grand Prix circus.
Satoru spent three disappointing seasons with Lotus, before switching to Tyrrell in 1990.
In 1991, he was reunited with Honda, but it turned out to be his last year in F1.
His best season of the five seasons he drove Formula 1 was 1987, his debut year.
He scored points on four occasions with a total of 7 and one 4th place.
In 1988, he scored 1 point, in 1989 3 (another 4th place), 1990 another 3 and in 1991 2.
After his Formula 1 career Satoru went back to Japan and set up his own racing team
in Formula Nippon. With several different drivers his team has won several titles since.
Satoru is also taking care of the careers of his son Kazuki,
and Tora Takagi, who spent some time in Formula 1 as well (1998-1999).
