in the Brabham that brought him his 2nd World Championship at Spa-Francorchamps in 1983 (middle),
and in the Lotus at Spa-Francorchamps in 1988 (right).

The two years at Lotus for Piquet were frustrating ones.
His best results were three 3rd places in 1988, and in total he only scored 34 points in those two years.
The race at Spa, Belgium, in 1989 was one of only two 'did not qualify' results
for Piquet in his career, the other being the 1982 race at Detroit with Brabham.

His two years with Benetton were better than the previous ones with Lotus.
He did win two Grand Prix in 1990 and one in 1991, and scored 71 championship points.
The arrival of a new talented youngster named Michael Schumacher as his teammate
at the end of 1991 meant the end of his Formula 1 career, when he struggled and was beaten by Schumacher.
He didn't get a new drive in Formula 1 and in 1992 he tried his luck across the Atlantic.
During practice for the Indianapolis 500 Miles race in 1992
he crashed heavily and suffered serious leg injuries.
It meant the end of his international racing career.
Nelson went back to Brazil, where he became a successful businessman.
Currently, he is overseeing the career of his son Nelson jr.,
who is racing in the GP2 category (Previously known as Formula 3000).
