Above: Didier Pironi at Zolder in 1981.
Didier was on his way to the 1982 World Championship, when he crashed his Ferrari into the back of Alain prost'
Renault and cartwheeled during a rain-drenched free practice at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim.
Pironi was badly injured, but survived.
He never raced Formula 1 again, although he tested a Formula 1 AGS a few years later.
Instead, he turned his attention to power boat racing.
In 1987, he competed in the World Championship and had already won his first race,
when during a race off the Isle of Wight his motorboat hit a wave, flipped and crashed,
killing Didier and two crew members instantly
