Aguri Suzuki had been successful as a racing driver in his home-country for a few years
in Formula 3, Formula 2, touring cars and Formula 3000 (he won the Japanese title in 1988),
when he made his Formula 1 debut in 1988 with Larrousse-Lola in Japan.
A race he finished as 16th.
In 1989 he was picked up by Zakspeed to act as their second driver.
That year was a complete disaster with the underpowered Yamaha engine
the Zakspeed cars were slow and Aguri never managed to get past pre-qualifying in 16 races that year.
In 1989 he returned to Larrousse-Lola and at the Japanese Grand Prix,
after the disqualification of Ayrton Senna Aguri became the very first Japanese driver to get on a F1 podium.
It was the highlight of his career. After that he only scored two more points and
had more frustrating years with Larrousse-Lola, Footwork and Ligier.
At the Japanese Grand Prix of 1995 Suzuki crashed heavily and injured his neck.
He decided to retire from racing and became a team owner in Japan and the United States,
where he has his own Formula Nippon team and an IRL team together with Adrian Fernandez,
under the name of Super Aguri Fernandez Racing, with driver Kosuke Matsuura.
