CART Champion of 1997 and 1998

Above: Alex Zanardi in action at Spa-Francorchamps and Hockenheim
in his Il Barone Rampante Formula 3000 Reynard in 1991.
That year Zanardi nearly won the Championship;
he ended runner-up to Christian Fittipaldi with 42 points and two wins.
After his initial efforts to get succesful in Formula 1 failed,
Alex went across the ocean at the end of 1995 and became hugely succesful - and popular - in the U.S.
In 1997 and 1998, he won the CART Championship.
This opened the door to new opportunities in Formula 1
and for 1999 Alex signed for Williams.
The hopes were high, but it became a frustrating year,
with no results worth mentioning. After just one year Alex left Formula 1 again.
In 2001, he emerged in CART Racing again, where
on September 15, 2001, close to the end of a Champcar race at the Lausitzring in Germany,
Alex Zanardi was involved in a horrific crash at around 340 km/h.
He suddenly spun and was hit by Alex Tagliani.
As a result of the crash, Zanardi lost both his legs (amputated below the knee), and nearly his life.
In his CART career Alex drove 66 races, winning 15 of them.
These days, Alex, with artifical limbs, races in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
