Above: this world famous bridge was completed in 1937.
The bridge was officially opened on May 28, 1937.
Until 1964 it was the longest bridge in the world (1,280m/4,198f).
The bridge was designed and built by Joseph Strauss (1870 - 1938),
and cost (in 1937!) US$ 27 million to built.
The height of the two pylons is 227m/745f above the water (152m/500f above the road).
Total weight of bridge, anchorage's, and approaches is 887,000 tons = 804,700,00 kg.
The bridge is 27m/90f wide.
Over 42 million vehicles a year pass (south- and northbound) the bridge;
over 116,000 vehicles a day.
Crossing the bridge requires a $3,- toll.
The color of the bridge isn't red, but international orange.
Since its opening, the bridge has only been closed three times,
due to severe weather conditions.
