Above: La Tour Eiffel (or Eiffel Tower) could well be the world's best known tower,
as well as the symbol that stands for the city of Paris.
Built in only 2 years, 2 months and five days, it was part of the World Trade Fair, held in Paris in 1889.
Developed by Gustave Eiffel and designed by Stephen Sauvestre, the tower was the world's tallest man-made
structure from its opening on March 31st, 1889 until 1930, when New York's Chrysler Building took that title.
The tower has three observation levels, at 57m/187f, 115m/377f, and 274m/899f (276m/906f: outdoor).
You can reach all three levels by elevators, but you can also reach the first and
second level by walking the stairs (360 steps or 1,060 steps respectively). In total the tower has 1,665 steps.
The tower weighs an enormous 10,100 tons.
When completed in 1889, the tower was just over 312m/1,024f tall.
In the time that went by, the tower became a little taller because of different antennas
that were placed on top. At the moment, the tower, including antenna, is 324m/1,063f tall.
Without antenna, the tower is 300m/984f tall.
Since the opening in 1889, over 200 million people have visited La Tour Eiffel.
In 2002, over 6,5 million people paid to go up the Eiffel Tower
The tower was almost torn down in 1909, but because of its antenna,
which was used for telegraphy at that time, this was prevented.
The Eiffel Tower is painted every seven years, for which 50 tons of paint is used.
