Above: day and night view of the Western part of the city.
Shenzhen, like Shanghai, is a booming skyscraper city.
In the last few years some hundreds mid- and high-rise buildings have been built.
And in the next few years even more are going to be built and are being planned.
Some of those will be among the tallest in the world.
About twenty years ago, Shenzhen was nothing more than a simple rural hamlet
close to the Hong Kong border, called Baoan.
The government destined it to be a special economic zone and because of this
and lots of foreign investments the city has ever since grown to a small metropolis
with a population of close to 500,000 people.

Above: Shenzhen's tallest: Shun Hing Square (384m/1,260f, 69 stories, 1996).
Shun Hing Square is a complex that consists of the office tower and a 35-story residential/office/retail building,
which can be seen in front of the tower on the left picture.
Without its spires the building is 325m/1,066f tall.
The tower has an public observatory on one of its top floors.

Above left and middle: Shenzhen's 2nd tallest: SEG Plaza
(292m/958f, including spire: 346m/1,135f, 70 stories, 2000).
This tower also has a public observatory.
Above right: Shenzhen Special Zone Press Tower (262m/859f, excluding spire: 180m/590f, 48 stories, 1998).

Above left: Shenzhen Broadcasting Center Building (241m/789f, 48 stories, 2001).
The smaller tower is 106m/348f and has 25 stories.
Above middle and right: Hung Cheung Plaza seen from a few angles (218m/715f, 63 stories).
Though the building looks completed on these pictures, the building was still under construction,
when the pictures were taken. Mainly on the inside some work had to be done, but this was put on hold.
The building is still on hold today.
In the background, the two 'golden' New Century Plaza Towers,
which are also still on hold.

Above left: Shenzhen World Trade Centre Building (225m/738f, 50 stories, 2001).

Above right: First Tower (208m/682f, 52 stories, 2001).

Above left: Electronics Science & Technology Building (182m/597f, 45 stories, 2000).
Above middle left: United Plaza (195m/640f, 56 stories, 1998).
Above middle and right: the greatly looking Shenzhen Development Bank (184m/602f, 35 stories, 1996)
