TUNTEX SKY TOWER

348 metres/1,440 feet
85 stories
Completed: 1997
Tallest building in Taiwan (1997 - 2003)
13th tallest building in the world

Kaohsiung's tallest skyscraper: Tuntex Sky Tower (the building is also known as Tuntex & Chien-Tai Tower).
Including the spire on top - which isn't part of the architectural design - the building has a height of 378m/1,240f.
The building is currently the city's main landmark, which just can't be missed seen from miles away.
Designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum.
C.Y. Lee is also responsible for the design of Taipei's Taipei 101.
The design was inspired by the Chinese character kao from the city's name.

Until the end of 2003, Tuntex Sky Tower was Taiwan's tallest, but it lost this title
when Taipei's 509 metres tall
Taipei 101 was topped out.
The building is partly in use as office and residential. It also houses a hotel (Grand Splendor Hotel;
with the second highest hotel rooms in the world; after Shanghai's
Jin Mao Tower).
and a department store (Chien Tai Department Store). It has an observatory as well,
which can be entered through one of the fastest elevators in the world (600 metres per minute)
and has an admission price of 200 Taiwan dollar (about US$6,-).
It's worth to go up; you will get a nice view over the city.
But, don't spend the ticket on the supposed free drink you will get.
The drinks are so expensive up there that despite the discount of 100 Taiwan dollar you get with the ticket,
this drink will most likely be the most expensive one you will have in Taiwan.
